PHILLY 3 FOR ALL: Kinectic in Kensington, Eats & Beats, Raise the Vibration


Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby

This design competition and parade of human powered vehicle floats started as an economic development initiative of the New Kensington Community Development Corporation to compliment the East Kensington Neighbors Association's Trenton Avenue Arts Festival. It has turned into something of an annual cultural phenomenon that celebrates the artistic and DIY nature of folks who are powering East Kensington, Fishtown and Port Richmond. The Urban Nutrition Initiative's Youth Development Program has organized this night of locally sourced and organic dinner and entertianment to benefit the the youth-led Rooted in Community Conference and the Mariposa Food Co-op. Sponsors include Philadelphia Folksong Society, John and Kira's Chocolates, chef Colleen McDonnough, the BioDiversity farm and the Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative. Sliding-scale tickets are $15-50 and available here.

Raise the Vibration

If you're into meditation, social consciousness, or free stuff, you might want to check this out. Billed as a "gift of love to the city of Philadelphia," the event will celebrate various cultures and groups in an attempt to build strength and agents of change through unity. Hip-hop, rock, folks and children's music is on the agenda, as well as an art zone with installations and workshops and a children's zone that features yoga, instrument construction and mask making. Raffles, food and water are also free.
