This opening reception features a series of sculptures called The Messengers, with which viewers can interact via texting and Twitter. Including works by Vermont artist

Rise and Fly with the Philadelphia Folklore Project

Rise and Fly, an annual celebration of checkers, has drawn checkers greats to Boot's Laundromat in North Philadelphia since 2006. Now, as part of the Philadelphia Folklore Project's Cultural Exchange exhibition, artist Isaac Maefield will bring Rise and Fly to PFP's West Phillly home. It's part of PFP's new exhibition to honor four local African-American men who have devoted their lives to community betterment. In addition to checkers games, come for the artist-made checkerboards and crafts and refreshments. Maefield, a champion for local cultural traditions, is best known for his carvings and poetry.

InLiquid, Arts Rising, Crane Arts and Kensington South Neighborhood Advisory Council combines to produce this featured event of Philadelpha Open Studio Tours East of Broad. This show of solidarity to support art, the environment and each other includes music, performances and delicious treats from the city's most innovative food trucks. A costume parade down American Street concludes the event from 4-6 p.m.
