40th Street Summer Series

Saturday, May 25
40th and Walnut Streets
Free

The University City District, the Rotunda and the University of Pennsylvania come together again this year to present the 40th Street Summer Series, a free family-friendly outdoor concert series. For nine years, the Summer Series has hosted world-renowned performers on the green space at 40th and Walnut Streets, just behind the Walnut West Free Library. This year, the series will expand to five concerts, held on the last Saturday of the month, May through September. The festivities also feature a lawn full of jugglers, fire artists, face painting, balloon art and more.

The kick-off concert on Saturday, May 25, features Brooklyn Qawwali Party. This thunderous 11-piece brass band hails from New York City and is known for their awesome renditions of 700-year-old Pakistani Sufi music (called Qawwali). Think gospel goes to the subcontinent.

Find beauty amongst the abandoned, obscure and inaccessible sites around Philadelphia during the second Hidden City Festival. Celebrating the "power of place through the imagination of contemporary artists," the festival features art installations, performances and events in a variety of historically significant and oft-forgotten locations.

This Saturday, the shindig kicks off with a block party at 12th and Wood streets.

Hidden City will highlight eight hidden sites in neighborhoods across the city, including Center City, Germantown, Frankford, South Philadelphia and University City. Click here for Flying Kite's interview with Hidden City's artistic director.
