MEET THE MAKERS: Anna Bario & Page Neal

Meet the Makers is a photo series illuminating Philadelphia's small-scale manufacturers. Click here and here to see previous installments.

Anna Bario and Page Neal moved to Philadelphia to open their jewelry business. They looked around the country, took a lay of the land, and decided this was the place. From their humble beginnings in a small workshop space on Spring Garden Street, the ambitious young designers have grown Bario-Neal into a storefront space in Bella Vista—they currently employ seven people and are about as busy as they can handle.

Once you get a look at the work, that success seems inevitable. From custom engagement rings to everyday bracelets and earrings, their work radiates an enchanting aesthetic vision infused with texture, delicacy and surprising moments of asymmetry. Bario and Neal also place a huge emphasis on using sustainably-sourced and recycled materials.

The metalwork is all done in the shop at 6th and Bainbridge Streets, on open display for customers, but the team also takes full advantage of nearby Jewelers Row for more intensive work, including casting and stone setting. Traditionally, jewelry stores are pristine, unfettered showcases, but there is something infinitely more romantic about being able to watch something you intend to wear or give with love come into existence.
